ISN/APSN/IBRO School
16-21 June 2008
School of Pharmacy, Fudan University, No. 130 Dong’an Road, Student Lab, Level 1, Building No. 5 (West Campus), Shanghai 200032, China
About the School:
The main objective of the School is to enable graduate students and junior postdoctoral fellows from the Asia-Pacific region to meet in an environment where they can acquire knowledge on recent advances in neurochemistry research and for them to have a platform from which to gain practical experience on neurochemical techniques.
The School will cover lectures, practical seminars and a variety of laboratory projects. These will focus on several technique-oriented areas in neurochemistry. Each student will be involved in 2-3 hands-on lab sessions in the participating university department.
Interaction between the students and teachers will be emphasized and encouraged throughout the School. Prospective participants are expected to attend the APSN symposium.
Eligibility: Graduate students and young postdoctoral fellows from the Asia-Pacific region are eligible to apply. Students will be selected on the basis of their academic record (especially peer-reviewed publications), stage of career and experience, as well as referee reports. Selection will be coordinated by the APSN School committee.
School Theme: Animal Model of Stroke
Hands-on technique available:
- Post-stroke neurological score's evaluation and infarct size determination
- mRNA extraction and PCR (RT- or real-time) for apoptotic genes
- Protein extraction and Western blotting
- Immunohistochemical staining for apoptotic protein expression
- TUNEL/Hoechst staining
- HPLC analysis for blood samples
- GC/MS analysis for blood samples
Application Details
A condition of attendance at the School is that all students will also be expected to attend and present at the APSN symposium. Students will be required to register for the APSN Symposium in Shanghai 23-26 June 2008. Selection of students from applicants will be undertaken by the School Committee. It is expected that successful applicants will be advised by email by 31 March 2008.
Young investigators (graduate students and young postdocs up to 5 yrs after Ph.D.) are invited to apply for the School. Your applications should be sent to the APSN School Chair, Dr Alfreda Stadlin (email: a.stadlin@griffith.edu.au ) by the deadline 21 March 2008. Late applications will not be accepted. Your application must contain the following information:
- Letter of intent, including how the School is relevant to your research and career. Please indicate whether you require a Travel Fellowship and whether you have travel funds available from any other source.
- Curriculum Vitae containing academic qualifications, institution where they were obtained, and the year of graduation. Masters and PhD students should indicate the years of candidature and the likely title of their thesis topic. Ph.D. or M.D. graduates should provide the date of award.
- A list of peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed publications, and abstracts presented at local and/or international scientific meetings.
- The names of two referees, one of whom should be your present supervisor – these references (approximately one half A4 page) need to be included as a Word file.
- Scientific abstract relevant to the poster to be presented at the APSN symposium (refer to the abstract submission form).
- All the above information listed above should be provided in a single word file.
All successful applicants will be provided with 85% travel support (cheapest train or airfare), food and accommodation during the entire time of the school and APSN symposium (from 15-26 June).
